Digital saving lives
Network Rail leads the UK rail industry on suicide prevention initiatives that are world leading – it is an ongoing challenge. Its latest initiative sought to make millions of passengers feel that they could help by reporting an incident of a person at risk.
We were tasked with creating a digital service which would allow the public to alert the authorities to people who might be at risk of suicide.
We designed a fully responsive, user friendly web application, Rail505, that is extremely quick to load, even in areas with poor connectivity. Our agile working methodology was ideal for the way in which the project needed to run, allowing development to move forward while research progressed, flexing functionality as required. Working closely with all stakeholders, we ran a live test to ensure the app was failsafe when it went live.
The pilot changed attitudes and likely behaviour of the public. There was an 82% increase in the likelihood of a member of the public reporting a relevant incident and there were two successful interventions made following reports sent through the app.
